NHL Best Bets 1/22/21

Patrick Kane

I hope you’re all doing well on this beautiful Friday! It’s a great day to watch and gamble on NHL Hockey! The NHL has been a bumpy ride so far, but we’ve got the ticket for tonight’s profits. We have a great lineup of games this evening, but I’ve honed in a few matchups for us to Take it to the Hizzy! Let’s make some cash on these NHL Best Bets!

Detroit Red Wings vs. Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are coming off a 5-4 OT loss to the Florida Panthers. There was plenty of offense available for the Hawks, but one miss cue after another led to their eventual demise in extra time. As expected, the Blackhawks defense is in shambles. They’re averaging five goals and 31 shots against per game through the first four matchups. These woes will continue to be the reality of the 2021 season, especially with the lack of depth on offense and in net. The Blackhawks are latent with injuries and have started three different goalies in four games.

Despite these woes, the Blackhawks will get their first win tonight against the Red Wings. Detroit is 2-2 on the season but hasn’t been impressive. They’ve scored two fewer goals than the Hawks through four games and have split both their two game series’ against Carolina and Columbus. The Blackhawks have finally found success on the power play, and I think that will be a significant factor in tonight’s game.

The Blackhawks are ranked 3rd in the league on the power play thus far. It’s still very early, but it’s promising to see, given the team’s recent issues developing the special teams’ group. The Hawks are coming off a four-goal performance and are hosting their first home game of the year; it’s the right spot to jump on their line, even if they’re favored. The Blackhawks have also hit the over in three straight games. The total for the Hawks has been 6.5 in every game so far. The current total for tonight’s game is six goals, and I’m slamming the over. If you doubt Chicago’s ability to win, you should be on the total, neither team is playing good defense.

The old Chicago and Detroit rivalry may not spark a ton of aggression in this game, but I do expect the Blackhawks to play with an edge as they look for their first victory on the year; it’s tough to lose four straight.

Best Bet: Blackhawks ML -139 / Second Best Bet: Over 6.5 +102

New York Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The New York Rangers have been disappointing to me to start the 2021 season. They’ve only won a single game and have been very streaky on offense. The Rangers only registered one goal through the first two games but did respond with eight goals in their last two matchups. New York is one of the teams playing Exhibition hockey; there’s a lack of awareness on defense, and the gameplan on offense isn’t what it seems.

The Rangers lead the league in total shots on offense but are 21st for goals scored; it’s not the best balance. The gameplan on offense focuses on getting the puck to the net, but New York isn’t finishing. The defensive gameplan lacks balance in the sense that, there is none. The Rangers have allowed eight goals in three games, and their only victory came with a shutout by backup goalie Alexander Georgiev. Georgiev and Igor Sheserkin have been sharing the net, and it seems like tonight will be Shesterkin’s night. Igor made an appearance in their last matchup against the Devils after Georgiev let in four goals on 20 shots; Shesterkin would stop 8 of 8 in relief.

I’ll be taking the Penguins on the Moneyline in this matchup. The Rangers are trying to answer too many questions while the Penguins are playing above-average Hockey. The Penguins are coming off back-to-back wins against one of the league’s best in the Washington Capitals. The Penguins did lose their first two games to the Flyers, but they’ve also scored 14 total goals through four games; they’ve been competitive in each matchup so far.

The total in this game seems high at 6.5 goals, but it would be hard not to take the Over, especially with the trends I’ve provided. The Rangers are getting the puck to the net but lack defensive awareness, plus the Penguins are scoring around 3-4 goals a game. The Penguins have gone over the total in every game so far, so I like our odds.

Best Bet: Penguins ML -146 / Second Favorite Bet: Over 6.5 -103

Best Bet: Blackhawks ML + Penguins ML – $20 Bet Pays $38.12
