Ah, the AFC East. A division dominated by the New England Patriots in seasons past. In the last 19 seasons, the Patriots have won the AFC East 17 times. Now enter the year 2020. Tom Brady picked up and took his talents to Tampa and the Patriots are clinging to the hope they earn a Wild Card spot. So, who is destined to take over as the new Division Champs?

AFC East: As it Stands

Buffalo Bills:

Currently, the division is being led by the Buffalo Bills with a respectable 7-3 record. Josh Allen seems to have found his footing and is proving he can be a franchise Quarterback. Buffalo has a few tough match-ups coming down the stretch. They have a meeting with the Los Angeles Chargers, who are due to win a close game after so many heartbreaks.

Staying with the California trend, the Bills also play the San Francisco 49ers. With 49ers running back Raheem Mostert expected to be back after the Bye Week, the matchup gets slightly more difficult. They also have meetings with Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos, and two tough divisional matchups with Patriots and Miami Dolphins. Buffalo has a tough path to take if they want to be crowned Division Champs.

Miami Dolphins:

The Miami Dolphins are currently in second place. After starting the season off 0-2, the Dolphins have righted the ship. With a 6-3 record, Miami will look to rookie Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to lead them to victory. This week, they have the Denver Broncos which could prove to be a challenging matchup at Mile High Stadium.

Following Denver, Miami has the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, and Las Vegas Raiders. Ending the season, Miami will travel to Buffalo in Week 17 for a division-contending matchup against the Buffalo Bills. The Bills were able to squeak out a 31-28 win over Miami in Week 2 of the season. Miami will look to avenge that loss and possibly get their first Division title since 2008.

Playing Catch Up:

Respectively, the New England Patriots are sitting with a record of 4-5. It would be unlikely for the Patriots to become Division champions at this stage in the season. With question marks on offense and Buffalo and Miami playing well, New England is looking for Wild Card Spot.

The New York Jets are 0-8. They are looking towards the draft in hopes to be in contention in the coming years to be AFC East Champs.

And the Winner Is?

As good as the Buffalo Bills are playing, the Miami Dolphins will edge them out for the crown. Buffalo and Miami’s remaining strength of schedule seems to be equal. When all is said and done, I believe it will come down to the Week 17 matchup.

Down the stretch, Miami has gotten solid QB play from Tua, the defense, and even special teams have made their presence known. The Dolphins feel the magic in the air, (no, not Fitzmagic), and win a close 34-31 matchup against their division rival. Going deep into their sock drawer, Miami pulls out an AFC East Championship in 2020.

  1. Josh Allen engineered a real game-winning drive last week – as opposed to a desperation heave that miraculously succeeded. BILLS would have been up 2 games with 6 to play instead of just one. Having said that, as a new Bills fan, I am looking forward to the week 17 showdown that seems to be shaping up.
