Disappointing Rookie Season by David Montgomery

When Matt Nagy took over as the Bears head coach in 2018, he inherited running back Jordan Howard. Howard was the starter and more of a ground-and-pound running back with little to no upside in the passing game. This limited what Nagy could do because Howard was only a two-down running back.

Matt Nagy saw what the Bears offense had done in his first year as head coach garnering the NFL Coach of the Year honors. He decided to trade Jordan Howard to the Philadelphia Eagles and start over with a new running back.

In the 2019 NFL draft, Chicago Bears selected David Montgomery with their first pick of the draft in the third round. Instantly, many people compared Montgomery to Kareem Hunt, who the Chiefs drafted in the third round when Nagy was their offensive coordinator. Kareem Hunt went on to lead the NFL in rushing in his rookie year and was an electrifying running back while in Kansas City.

Montgomery enjoyed a decorated career at Iowa State. He was a relentless runner who loved contact and was a threat in the passing game. Many experts thought that he could go on to win Rookie of the Year as Kareem Hunt did. Unfortunately, in his debut for the Bears, David Montgomery only had six carries in a loss to the Packers in the opening game of the 2019 season. Unfortunately, this would go on to be a theme throughout the year in 2019, but I don’t think that will be the case in 2020.
