D’Andre Swift: Trust or Bust

D’Andre Swift will be an impactful rookie for the Detroit Lions in the 2020 season. Swift was taken in the second round to add a dynamic running back to the Lions offense. Swift has shown his ability to be a receiving threat and a rushing threat while he was at Georgia.

Talented Lions Offense

Swift fell into a unique situation in Detroit as he will not have to be the centerpiece of the Lions offense. Matthew Stafford is returning from injury and is looking to rebound and have another successful year. Stafford was on pace for a monster season last year before the injury. Swift will also benefit from the other weapons on the Detroit offense.

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay is another player who I think will be in line for a big year. The young wide receiver has been making significant strides every year since he entered the NFL. Last year’s first-round pick TJ Hockenson should also have an improved sophomore year. For the past few years, we have seen that Tight Ends are usually more productive in their second year. Swift will have plenty of help on the Lions offense and won’t have to worry about defenses stacking the box.

Failures of Kerryon Johnson

The Detriot Lions had high hopes for Kerryon Johnson when they drafted him in the second round of the 2018 draft. Sadly, Johnson has proven that he cannot stay healthy and be a reliable contributor for the Detroit Lions. In his rookie season, Johnson showed some promise averaging over 5.4 yards a carry. However, he missed six games in his rookie year.

In his sophomore campaign, he only played in eight games and averaged 3.6 yards per carry. How significant is that? Compared to 2018, he had five fewer carries and 238 fewer rushing yards. Matt Patricia knows he is on the hot seat and cannot risk seeing Johnson go down again, so he had to invest a high draft pick in another running back.

I think it is only a matter of time before Swift goes from sharing the backfield with Johnson to taking over as the lead back. Johnson had his chance to cement himself as a lead horse. Unfortunately, his health hasn’t been cooperating. The Lions ran out of patience and invested Swift, and that is why I Trust him to be a fantasy contributor this season.
