Cleveland Browns Destiny is Tied to Baker Mayfield Not Nick Chubb

How Baker Mayfield is Supported by the Browns

The 2020 Cleveland Browns are not the Browns we all grew up with. The 2020 Browns have weapons at every offensive level led by Baker Mayfield and have legitimate, respectable defenders. But the common theme of the 2020 Browns and the past Browns teams is can they pull it all together for a playoff run?

If you look at Cleveland’s roster, it looks like Madden did a fantasy draft. Baker Mayfield is a former Heisman Trophy winner, leading the Oklahoma Sooners to a playoff berth. Mayfield is surrounded by NFL receivers and former college teammates, Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. Both receivers have proven that they can succeed in the NFL. What more can a young quarterback want?

Nick Chubb can be Great, but Mayfield is the Glue

How about a running back that can take the pressure off of Mayfield? Nick Chubb is one of the brightest young stars at the running back position. Since his rookie year in 2018, he has averaged 1245 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns per year. That type of production from a rookie-contract running back is what team’s dream about when they think of Super Bowl-caliber teams.

Even with Nick Chubb carrying the Browns with his rushing attack, Mayfield is actually the key to Cleveland’s success. Mayfield was second to Jameis Winston in total interceptions with 21. Twenty-one Cleveland Browns drives were killed by Mayfield interceptions, only better than Winston who is now a back-up.

Final Take on Baker Mayfield

It is really hard to quantify how fewer interceptions from Mayfield would translate into team success, but we can try. If Mayfield threw one less interception against the Rams (lost by 6 points), Seahawks (lost by 4 points), Steelers (lost by 7 points), and the Bengals (2 fewer interceptions, lost by 10 points), the Browns could have swung from 6-10 to 10-6 and a playoff berth. With five fewer interceptions, Mayfield could be considered an up-and-coming young QB with a playoff berth. But instead, we are here wondering if Mayfield will ever break out.
